Vinturi vs. Glass Wine Decanter

Wine decanting is an age old custom, a way of opening up a wine that has been aging for some time. Decanting removes sediment, allows oxygen to comingle with the wine, can serve to mellow the alcohol content slight and generally allows the nose of the wine to open up.

The new trend in decanting is around single glass decanting, known primarily by the Vinturi brand of wine decanters. I have one myself and have to admit it does change the character of the wine enough to detect a difference. I can't say with confidence that the difference is necessarily better - but there is a difference.

The unit itself is quite simple. Its a small hard plastic tube like shape (slightly egg shaped) that you pour into directly from the bottle. The vinturi has a tapered cone inside that creates a whirlpool like action, drawing the wine in a swirling pattern down a smaller opening into the glass. There are two small vents on either side of the tube, drawing in air as the whirlpool descends the smaller opening. This action creates a sucking sound - not the most pleasant at a classy dinner party - but you can actually hear the air being sucked in and mixing with the wine.

Better than a traditional wine decanter? I don't know. Its certainly faster and, in a pinch, may be your only shot at turning that 'slightly off' red into something a bit more palatable at your next dinner party.
