Will Porcelain Cone Filters improve the taste of my coffee?
Porcelain cone filters are not quite what you might expect given the name, but they can improve the flavor of your coffee. They are not so much a filter as they are a holder for the filter. You put the paper filter inside the porcelain cone, add ground coffee, and pour boiling water into the filter. There have been plastic holders like this for years, and the effect is the same. Why will this give better tasting coffee? The reason is because the single biggest thing in preparation that effects the flavor of the coffee is the temperature of the water. If you use a traditional drip maker, you have virtually no control over the temperature of the water, and most of the ones on the market are not hot enough for proper brewing. However, if you boil the water yourself to pour over the filter, you can get it at just the right temperature. So you see what is meant by saying that the porcelain cone filter can improve the flavor of the coffee. It can, but not because it's porcelain, but rather because it forces you to boil the water yourself, and this gives the chance for a better (hotter) water temperature.
