Kitchen Knives

A solid stable of kitchen knives can make the difference between a frustrating cooking experience and a delightful one. They also help with aesthetics - a sharp knife allows the chef to chop with precision, giving diced tomatoes a sharp edge instead of a pressed or torn look resulting in soupy liquid on the bottom of the cutting board.

While one may be tempted to buy a full set, consisting of 1-2 chef knives, 1-2 paring knives, a chopping knife and one or more other specialty styles - purists believe in starting simple. A bread knife with a serrated edge, a small paring knife for detailed work and one 6-8" chef knife for everything else.

A nice chef knife may set you back $50-$100 depending on the brand, craftsmanship and materials used which sounds very expensive at first, but it isn't much more than buying that 10-knife set at your local box store that is sure to leave you unsatisfied.

Shop around - find single knives or a better quality set to get you started and go from there.
